John Ebohon is a Reader in Energy, Sustainability and Development at De Montfort University in Leicester, and Director of the Developing World Built Environment Research Unit at De Montfort. His teaching and research interests are in the fields of energy, sustainability and development, built environment economics and finance institutions, and the process of economic development, technology transfer, and construction multinationals.

He has published widely and contributed papers to international conferences and seminars in these fields, especially with regards to sub-Saharan Africa. He is currently supervising a number of higher degree candidates on different built environment and sustainability related topics.

Daniel Irurah is a Senior Lecturer in Design and Construction at the University of the Witwatersrand. His focus in teaching, research and consultancy work is Sustainability in the Built Environment. His PhD and Masters work focused on embodied energy in construction materials, climatic response, energy conservation and renewable energy for buildings within inter-tropical regions.

Dr. Irurah is a member of several professional bodies, including CIB Working Commissions and Task Groups, the South African Institute of Building, and the Institute of Energy. He maintains strong links with educational institutions, academics and practitioners in the developing countries, and is a member of several expert advisory groups on energy efficiency and low-cost housing policy in South Africa.

Professor Adebayo's areas of expertise include architecture, urban design and housing; and architectural design for commercial institutions, housing, educational and community projects as well as health facilities. He has wide experience in Europe and Africa. His teaching interests include architectural design, the theory of architecture, history of urban settlements in Africa, urban design theories and application as well as housing in development, housing and culture, housing and sustainable environment and policy issues. His research interests are: Architecture - pre-colonial urban settlements to present, traditional African architecture, and evolution of settlements, educational buildings and learning space development; Urban design - neighbourhood design, urban centre redevelopment, revitalisation/regeneration of urban centres, waterfront developments and tourist destinations, transformation of African cities, public realm and spaces; Housing - housing and sustainable environments, inner city housing, housing and culture, neighbourhood layout and design. He is a member of the Institute of Architects of SA and Institute of Housing for SA. He has received awards in the areas of architectural design, housing and settlements and has authored a book and numerous publications and papers.

Anil Laul is a practising architect and director of the Anangpur Building Centre in India. He is also visiting professor at the School of Architecture and Planning, New Delhi, and chairman and chief consultant to the Nizamuddin Building Centre, and has been involved in several policy development initiatives. Prof. Laul’s work focuses on alternative technologies, housing provision and sustainable urban planning. His projects have received various awards and are listed as UNCHS Good Practices. He has researched, produced and directed 12 films on Appropriate Technologies on various subjects such as planning, water management, and reuse and recycling of materials. Prof. Laul is also an advisor on various technological committees and art commissions, has assisted with the development of local and national housing policy and is a member of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage.

Kirtee Shah is a practising architect and is the Director of ASAG (Ahmedabad Study Action Group), a non-government organisation run by concerned professionals committed to using their skills for public causes, especially slum upgrading, disaster rehabilitation and low-cost housing. Kirtee has served as housing and urbanisation expert on several expert advisory groups for the Indian national and various state and local governments, as well as to UNICEF and the World Bank and the Social Housing Foundation of South Africa. He is also President of Habitat International Coalition and a member of the international board of Ashoka: Innovators for the Public, a non-profit society supporting public service entrepreneurs in developing countries.

Dr. Ahmad Sanusi Hassan is a lecturer in Architecture Programme under the School of Housing, Building, and Planning, University of Science Malaysia (USM). His post-graduate work focused on sustainable architecture and urban planning development. At the University he is lecturing in courses related to urban design, and history and theory of architecture, as well as Computer Aided Design, computer animation and multimedia.

Vanderley John is a Civil Engineer and is currently Associate Professor of the Department Construction Engineering, Polytechnic School, University of São Paulo, Brazil and guest researcher at Högskolan I Gävle. Sweden. His main research areas are construction and the environment, recycling waste as building materials and durability of construction. He has published more than 100 papers on these topics. Dr. John has been very active in a number of technical and Scientific organisations. He has been deputy-superintendent of the Construction Committees of the Brazilian National Standards Association (ABNT) for the last 8 years. He is also a former president and vice-president of the Brazilian National Association of the Built Environment (ANTAC) and is still involved with the coordination of two ANTAC working groups: Recycling Wastes, and Sustainability.

Apart from his academic activities, he has also been an active collaborator of several governmental institutions. He is a member of the Brazilian Committee on Quality and Productivity in the Habitat, The Environmental Chamber of Construction of the São Paulo State; and the board of the Brazilian National Research Funs for Building Construction.

Maurício Pinto de Arruda was born in Londrina, Paraná, Brazil, in 1973. He obtained his degree in architecture from de State University of Londrina in 1997, and received his M. Arch. degree from the University of São Paulo in 2000. Arruda has been publishing articles on sustainable construction and social housing, since 1999. Currently, he works in his own office developing technologies in wood construction.

Liliana Miranda is the National Executive Secretary for Foro Ciudades Para la Vida (Cities for Life), as well as the President of the Ecociudad Association. She is a visiting Professor at three Universities where she lectures at Masters level in Urban Environmental Management, as well as an independent consultant with various international organisations. Arch. Miranda is also the official civic society (FCPV network) representative to the National Commission and Executive Commission for Rio+10.

Chrisna du Plessis is currently employed in the Division of Building and Construction Technology at the CSIR (South Africa) in 1997 where she works in the Programme for Sustainable Human Settlement. She is joint coordinator of a CIB task group (TG38) on Urban Sustainability and is a member of another CIB working group on Future Studies in Construction (W082). As member of the CIB, she has written the South African report on sustainable development and the future of construction, as well as co-authored the chapter on urban sustainability in the CIB Agenda 21 for the Construction Industry. The CIB has recently appointed her to prepare the Agenda 21 for Sustainable Construction in Developing Countries.

She has published a number of papers on the topic of sustainable development and sustainable construction in developing countries and is a regular keynote speaker at international conferences. In South Africa she is a member of the Interim National Council for the Implementation of Agenda 21 and Habitat Agenda.
