Best Practice Awards

LAST CALL - Sustainable Buildings Best Practice Awards

The Sustainable Building 04 Conference will provide a forum for exploring sustainability in buildings and construction in Africa.
It's one of 5 regional (Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, South East Asia, China, and Central / Eastern Europe) conferences leading up to a major sustainable building conference to be held in Tokyo in 2005.

As part of the conference, submissions are invited of sustainable buildings best practice.
It is envisaged that submissions will make a significant contribution to knowledge in this field by showing working examples and approaches.

Anyone involved in developing or managing buildings can submit a building or scheme. Incentives to submit examples include:

  • Media publicity and coverage at the SB’04 Conference
  • Award winners will receive support to attend the SB’05 conference in Tokyo.
This will include the cost of the conference fee and 4 night’s accommodation in Tokyo, Japan.

To submit best practice examples read below.

Submissions for the Best Practice Awards are free and do not require registration for the SB'04 Africa conference. There is no limit to the number of submissions. The only requirements are that submitted projects must have been completed in the 10 years preceeding 13 September 2004 and must be on the African continent or islands deemed as part of Africa (e.g. Madagascar and Mauritius). To submit, it is necessary to first REGISTER your interest. After you have registered, the browser will lead you to a page where further instructions can be downloaded. Before registering, please read the remainder of this page.

DEADLINE EXTENDED TO 3 SEPTEMBER 2004

Background

One of the objectives of the SB'04 conferences is to establish a database of sustainable building that come from and are appropriate to developing countries. To encourage this, a number of awards will be made at the conference for projects that showcase a commitment to sustainable building. These Sustainable Building Best Practice Awards are also seen as a mechanism for raising awareness about sustainable building amongst practitioners in these countries. The projects that received awards will also be showcased at the Tokyo conference.

Categories

The Awards will be made to completed building projects in the following categories:

  • Residential
  • Commercial
  • Community

Within each of these categories, awards will be given to projects that show leadership in social, environmental and economic sustainability, as well as an award to the project that shows the best triple bottom line.

Projects can be entered by any professional on the team, by the contractor or by the project owner/client.

Submission of entries

All submissions have to be done electronically.

There are two parts to be completed.

  • The first is the completion of an electronic assessment form in Microsoft Excel.
  • The second is the preparation of a presentation in a prescribed electronic format using Microsoft Powerpoint.

Deadline for submission: 20 August 2004.

Please register online first before downloading the templates. This registration does not commit you financially to attending the conference, or to submit a project.

Proposed assessment method

The projects will be assessed using a version of the Sustainable Building Assessment Tool (SBAT) developed by the CSIR. The SBAT has been designed to be aligned to the WSSD objectives and respond to developing country contexts. The version of the tool enables an outline assessment of sustainable building performance to be made. It also provides an opportunity for participants to include detailed performance data on the buildings. Where possible, protocols and units for this data should be aligned with the green building assessment methodology (see http://greenbuilding.ca).

Projects will be assessed according a number of indicators under the following criteria:

Social

  • Occupant Comfort
  • Inclusive Environments
  • Access to Facilities
  • Participation and Control
  • Education, Health and Safety

Economic

  • Local Economy
  • Efficiency of Use
  • Adaptability and Flexibility
  • Ongoing Costs
  • Capital Costs

Environmental

  • Water
  • Energy
  • Recycling and Reuse
  • Site and Landscaping
  • Materials and Components

Adjudication

The adjudication of the awards will be coordinated by the South African Institute of Architects, with assistance of the CSIR. The adjudicators will be announced shortly.
